Charles D. Currey, SIOR is the President of Lockwood Commercial Realty, Inc and Lockwood Management.

Charles, who usually goes by "Chuck," says he discovered part of his career by accident. In 1971, he insulated the air conditioning lines on his first car – a '64 El Camino – with industrial heat padding. The air conditioner worked better. This small discovery would be applied to countless applications.

Chuck became the assistant manager of a large apartment complex in Anaheim at 17 because he told the owner he could help him save on utility costs in addition to traditional management services. Sure enough, Currey’s use of insulation around the water heaters, timed lights in the parking garage, and energy efficient lights accomplished what he promised: lower electric bills.

Chuck transferred his experience to managing the complex he lived in while at the University of Southern California. These jobs helped pay for his education plus gain valuable experience in dealing with a wide variety of tenants in challenging situations.

He graduated from USC in 1978 with a degree in Business, and received his California Real Estate Broker’s license the same year.

Chuck went to work for Grubb & Ellis’ Mission Valley office after graduating. He quickly gravitated toward multi-tenant industrial and office leasing. Chuck was and continues to be his own mechanic, handyman, and contractor, and has always found it easy to relate to the tenants and business owners that require these services.

Chuck became one of the youngest brokers to join SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors) in 1986. He completed so many leases in his early years with Grubb & Ellis that staff repeatedly made the mistake of awarding him the “Most Transactions by a Leasing Team” Award. As of 2009, Chuck has brokered more than 5,000 commercial leases for his customers.

The early '90s market crash left many professionals in the real estate industry upside down. Chuck used this time to start his property management business, Commercial Management Consultants Inc., which continues to leverage on years of improving properties, rather than just manage them. Today Commercial Management Consultants manages 1.2 million square feet of industrial and office properties in San Diego, San Bernadino, Riverside, Orange, and Los Angeles counties.

The '90s found Chuck working at Colliers Iliff-Thorn in Carlsbad, before moving back to Grubb & Ellis after several years. In the 2000s Currey became a vested-partner/manager at GVA-IPC, and then the player-coach office manager of Sperry Van Ness’ Carlsbad office.

Chuck continues to focus on the sale and leasing of industrial and office properties. He has had the ongoing privilege to work with some of San Diego’s biggest tenants including Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, State Farm, YARA, Farmer’s Insurance, Frito-Lay, Bank of America, Union Bank of California, AAA, Hyspan Precision Products, Edward Jones, 24 Hour Fitness, and more. Chuck has brokered in excess of $900 million in transactions.

In 2009, after the disbanding of nearly all of SVN’s California offices, Chuck founded Lockwood Commercial in the Carlsbad Village. Lockwood is focused on a more complete real estate package, which includes finance, management, maintenance, appraisal, and more. Lockwood offers better splits and incentives to attract “Best-of-The-Best” brokers from the industry.
